Seagate offers SeaTools for Linux

Post by John_B »

Due to a catastrophic controller chip failure on a KINGSTON SUV500960G SSD which invoked and scrambled the drive's built-in encryption feature (which I never used), thus rendering the SSD permanently unreadable even by gparted, I was forced to install a 2TB Seagate-Samsung Spinpoint M9T ST2000LM003 HN-M201RAD HDD in the notebook in my signature:

Samsung ST2000LM003 - HDD FAQs
https://hddfaqs.com/samsung-st2000lm003/

I then did some further research on this HDD which also led me to Seagate's Web site where I was pleased to discover a version of SeaTools for Linux on offer:

Use this Linux version of the SeaTools GUI to diagnose hard drives and monitor SSDs.
https://www.seagate.com/ca/en/support/d ... #downloads

By default, it installs into /opt and works under both Linux Mint 20.3 and 21 Cinnamon.

Using Cinnamon's menu editor, I placed a link to run_SeaTools.sh in the Administration folder for convenient access.

The information and testing routines in SeaTools 5 (Linux) goes beyond those available in Linux Mint's Disks.

Thank you for that, downloaded, looks straightforward, the zip file has a single file SeaToolsLinuxX64Installer.run.

It's way past time that drive manufacturers started making versions of their tools for Linux. Now, if only Samsung and Sabrent would get onboard.

you need to make it executable then

chmod +x SeaToolsLinuxX64Installer.run

to then execute the run file

./SeaToolsLinuxX64Installer.run

if it fails because of lack of rights then

sudo ./SeaToolsLinuxX64Installer.run
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Micron do and their tool also supports their crucial branded drives as well. I use it occasionally with my drives, it's CLI only so works just fine with all distributions. The day Samsung give a chuff about anything other than Windows is the day hell freezes over.

But to be honest Samsung cannot even make a decent application for windows either, it's riddled with bugs.

will try that,
I looked at Properties and it was Executable, but it didn't work.

tnx,

BUT, it would sure be nice if they thought about folks with Big Monitors.....
mine barely takes up 1/3rd of the screen, I need a Microscope to use it

I couldn't agree more. That they thus far don't is a mystery given the prominence of Linux in enterprise computing.
