Favourite Password Manager

Post by jmorris84 »

Just curious what everyone likes to use and why. I don't currently use one but have been thinking about it a little more lately.

for me,
LastPass

it is free for one device.

I use the extension on my LM20.3 laptop with Firefox

they go to great lengths to ensure we are safe.
there was a recent report that one of their developer's account was hacked, but no database losses were incurred..... the report stated that developer was 'retrained' whatever that means?

KeePassXC.

It is open source, a fundamental requirement for a trusted password manager.
Bruce Schneier, one of the godfathers of cryptpgraphy had written:
Secrecy and security aren't the same, even though it may seem that way. Only bad security relies on secrecy; good security works even if all the details of it are public.
Let the last sentence melt in your mouth. (Underlining done by me to make it more clear.)

It means, that there is by guarantee no backdoor, which you can never be sure in case of closed source software.

KPXC is also powerful and flexible.

And, as RIH wrote, KeePass can be used on every platform, also iOS and MacOS.

KeePass XC because it exists only on my computer and is not reliant on an internet connection or cloud storage.

Regarding LastPass: This is not more than half a month back. That means: bad choice.

This is why I use it too.

And the fact that I can "auto type" the credentials into webpages and mostly avoid using the clipboard.

KeepassXC for me too. I like it being entirely local (which suits me) and the auto-type feature.

A lot of good stuff here. I appreciate all the responses and reasons why you are using the manager that you chose.

It creates a database that can be exported and imported on a different device. In other words, it's not hard to move around. You could even keep the database on a USB stick.

I keep a copy on a USB stick, not for portability, but as a backup.

Not being quite so 'cloud wary' as some, I actually keep my database in DropBox & so can easily access it & update it from any of my devices..

First choice is always in my brain, although I do keep them all listed in an encrypted .odt just in case.

That's what I do too. It works and it's easy. Good enough for me.
