Icons on the left in Ubuntu

Post by eiver »

Hi,

Please post what you think about the idea of buttons being on the left side of the window (Mac style).

My opinion:
As far as ergonomy is concerned, there is no argument that can convince me that either left side or right side is better for buttons. Therefore the buttons should remain on the right side to make incoming Windows users feel more comfortable. Thats the same as a discussion about where to place the Menu button.

Oh no! Again this? I thought everyone had already spoken on the subject, we must really re-start again? :(

Sorry.

I just created a new topic, because another topic was poisoned by a discussion about this.

There are already two (at least) extensive discussions of this topic here

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 54&start=0

and here

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 48&start=0

Both have, at times, grown rather heated. Please try to keep this topic serene and friendly.

I just hope that new Linux Mint users won't have to manually change the buttons.

As far as the buttons go, check this out

http://www.linuxmint.com/blog/?p=1371

The buttons in Mint will stay on the right by default but the user will have the option to change them to the left in either the Ubuntu style or the Apple style.

No. The solution is not to touch the buttons. Have to change them to make them as usual is a stopgap (I don't know if this is a good translation for the french "pis-aller". If not, I'm sorry for my bad english  )

That's totally inadequate. It does not allow for placing the buttons in the MIDDLE, where they rightfully belong. I intensely dislike being forced to take a stand for LEFT or RIGHT on any issue.

I don't use KDE 4 yet, so I don't know how things are set up there, but the Desktop Settings tool for Mint 9 shown at the Linux Mint blog doesn't give the user nearly as much control over the buttons as does KDE 3.5 (Control Center > Appearance & Themes > Window Decorations > Buttons tab) or Xfce4 (Settings > Window Manager Settings > Style tab > Button layout section.

Better than nothing, though.
