Turns out something bad was happening to my installation.

For my (our?) information: how was that bad induced; by you or by something/someone from the outside? For the moment just curious (but extremely so)!

WHat llikely happened was that you installed something that was incompatible with your system (eg. the nvidia drivers). And in the process it removed the things it was incompatible with. In your case, large parts of your OS that you definitely need.

If you're installing software in Linux, unless you're building from source the system will tell you if installing something will do something like this. It always does this, and you need to actually read that stuff.

What were the terminal commands you were copy-pasting from the net? They may have done as yet unseen damage.
Here to help.

thanks, I don't know exactly what I did and will never know. I have reinstalled linux and now have access to the driver manager. I will be updating my nvidia drivers from there from now on.

thanks for the help.

most likely you just inadvertently removed the mintdrivers ( not driver-manager) package and just reinstall that package and not the whole system .... it's a shame

Code: Select all

sudo apt install --reinstall mintdrivers

driver-manager package don't exist

Code: Select all

mint@mint ~ $ apt-cache policy mintdrivers
mintdrivers:
  Installato: 1.3.5
  Candidato:  1.3.5
  Tabella versione:
 *** 1.3.5 500
        500 http://packages.linuxmint.com sonya/main amd64 Packages
        500 http://packages.linuxmint.com sonya/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
mint@mint ~ $ apt-cache policy driver-manager
N: Impossibile trovare il pacchetto driver-manager
