[SOLVED] VirtualBox ERROR: /dev/vboxdrv not present

Post by cwmoser » Wed May 16, 2018 9:01 am

VirtualBox now fails, was working, probably some Linux Mint update.
Just a few weeks ago I had failure with VMWare, now VirtualBox.
Finally got VMWare working, but now need a solution for VirtualBox.
Wondering if the Mint updates are fubaring these apps.

THIS IS THE ERROR I GET:
Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)
The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv)
is either not loaded or there is a permission
problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall
virtualbox-dkms package and load the kernel
module by executing

'modprobe vboxdrv'
as root.

where: suplibOsInit what: 3
VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (-1908)
- The support driver is not installed. On linux,
open returned ENOENT.

What happens when you reinstall the virtualbox-dkms package and load the kernel module by executing '[sudo] modprobe vboxdrv'?

Thanks much.
Your suggestion got VirtualBox working for me.

I did this:
sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-dkms
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-dkms
sudo modprobe vboxdrv

This did NOT solve things for me.

A recent system update fubar'd virtualbox.
It was working fine until the update.
NOTHING I do fixes it.

I did this as mentoned above:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-dkms
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-dkms
sudo modprobe vboxdrv
here's the result:

Code: Select all

depmod....

DKMS: install completed.
Job for virtualbox.service failed because the control process exited with error code. See "systemctl status virtualbox.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.
