[Solved] - Not waking up after sleep mode

Post by tho9504 »

I recently did an update to my Linux Mint 20.1. There were lots of updates on it, so, i selected all of them and updated it. After re-booting, it works fine until the computer goes to sleep mode from being inactive for a while. When i try to move the mouse to log back in, all i get is a black screen with cursor blinking in the top level corner. I have to manually turn the computer off and start again for me to log back in again. It works fine afterwards till it goes into sleep mode again. I though it was due to kernel update, so i rolled back to previous kernel. but the problem is still there.
is there a way to tell if there are any broken dependencies which is causing the issue?

Sometimes that type of issue can happen because of a graphics driver, but you have not provided any information about your system for us to know if that might be the case. If you would like help, please supply the information requested in Section 5 of READ: How To Get Help!.

Since you have already tried using an older kernel, the next step might be rolling back to a Timeshift snapshot of when the system was working.

Re: Not waking up after sleep mode

It's possible an Nvidia driver update may be the source of the issue. Do you have a Timeshift snapshot to which you could restore?

You could try upgrading to the 5.8 kernel to see if that helps. It is available in Update Manager.

To install it, open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.8 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

You could also make sure you are running the most recent available BIOS/UEFI since power states, such as suspend, are often controlled by the UEFI firmware.

Given how many threads have popped up on the forum lately due to Nvidia issues, I would lean toward that being the issue. One way to possibly check if that is the cause is to check journalctl of the session which became stuck.

The following command prints the journal log information of the prior boot cycle (the one which you stopped with the power button) in reverse order (so the reason it would not resume from suspend should be near the top) and sends it to termbin.
journalctl -rb -1 | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply if you decide not to revert to a snapshot to get suspend working again.

Here is the url right after i manually re-booted after forced re-start using power button.

The command I gave you should give the entire boot information, but this output is only a partial and does not have any indication the system went to sleep. It's possible something happened when the data was being transferred from your computer to the website. I know sometimes people have mentioned they did not get a url, so it's possible there was a glitch which happened when you ran it. We just try again.

If you have not rebooted since you ran the command, just run it again.
journalctl -rb -1 | nc termbin.com 9999

If you have rebooted once since then, we'll adjust the number by one and run:
journalctl -rb -2 | nc termbin.com 9999

I think i solved the issue. i timeshifted back to before i made the updates. Then when into the update manager and updated everything again EXCEPT
nvidia-graphics-drivers-460
grub2 (2.04-1ubuntu26.12)

Once the updates were done and re-booted, i let it timeout to sleep mode. Then when i pressed any button, it asked me for the password to login and was able to login as usual without going to the frozen black screen. It had to do with the Nvidia drive

Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direct.

Were you able to go back and add grub2 without having any issues? I would not expect grub to be a factor in:

Glad it is now working again. If your issue is resolved, please go to your first post in this thread, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the title.

I would not expect grub2 to be a factor in this issue.

Edited to fix quote.

[SOLVED] - Re: Not waking up after sleep mode

Post by tho9504 »

I have updated the "grub2 (2.04-1ubuntu26.12)" and it did not hang in the sleep mode. So the culprit was the nvidia-graphics-drivers-460 update. I left it that driver alone.

Thanks for all your help..
