Post by TheSovietOnion »

Linux Mint has been crashing somewhat frequently for me lately. Are there any ways to check what's causing this?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Are there any ways to check what's causing this?
Yes. System logs, htop in a terminal, and system monitor. But first lets try a few things. If you go to Update Manager - click on View - Linux Kernels - are any higher kernels shown as available to you? Like 5.14 or 5.10? If so, I would try 5.14. If that doesn't help we might selectively deactivate some of the applets. I have quite a few applets installed and they don't cause problems, but sometimes they do cause others problems.

There have actually been a few new kernels since I last updated apparently. I'll update to 5.13 to see if that fixes anything. Thank you for replying.

Crashes due to ACPI error?

Post by TheSovietOnion »

'Every now and then my PC will crash regardless of what I am doing. I typed "journalctl -b -1 | grep -i "error\|warn\|fail\|acpi" into terminal and found these lines repeated a couple of times at the time of the crash;

Code: Select all

ACPI Error: No handler for Region [VRTC] (00000000a7fa362d) [SystemCMOS] (20190816/evregion-129)
ACPI Error: Region SystemCMOS (ID=5) has no handler (20190816/exfldio-261)
ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.PCI0.LPCB.EC._Q9A due to previous error (AE_NOT_EXIST) (20190816/psparse-529)
I assume that these ACPI errors are causing it, so is there any way to fix this?

Here's system info, in case it helps;

Turning off ACPI makes Linux Mint perform extremely poorly.

Post by TheSovietOnion »

Linux Mint keeps crashing for me and I think ACPI is to blame, but whenever I turn it off, Linux Mint gets incredibly laggy. It's pretty much unusable this way. Is there a way to turn ACPI off without this happening?

System info.

Re: Linux Mint crashes somewhat frequently. How can I check what's crashing it.

Moderator note: I have combined all three topics created on the same issue. It is confusing for others helping you if you create a new topic each time you make a change trying to solve the same issue.

I assume that these ACPI errors are causing it, so is there any way to fix this?
Your presumption is likely incorrect.

If your system is crashing, please run the following and let us know the url it returns.
journalctl -rb -1 | nc termbin.com 9999

That command prints the journal log information of the prior boot cycle in reverse order (so the reason for the crash should be near the top) and sends it to termbin.

Before you do that, I suggest you undo whatever change you made to "turn off ACPI" and I suggest you check and make sure your computer is running the most recent BIOS/UEFI available. That is how one clears as many ACPI errors as possible.

If this is the correct link Support For GL65 Leopard 10SFK: BIOS it appears E16U7IMS.10C which came out last December is the most recent BIOS.

Code: Select all

DMI: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. GL65 Leopard 10SFK/MS-16U7, BIOS E16U7IMS.109 05/20/2020
It appears there was also a firmware update this past May.

Could you please describe what happens when you computer "crashes"? There are no messages at the end of that journal which indicate a problem.

I did notice you have several kernel parameters. It is best to run with as few kernel parameters as possible. Could you please explain why you added them? That is not how one usually disables nouveau. I also could not find any recent references to anyone using that advanced power management setting.

Dec 05 00:36:39 andrew-GL65-Leopard-10SFK kernel: Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-5.13.0-22-generic root=UUID=0ab73265-bc09-4cfd-baaf-095bbdf1fd8f ro nouveau.blacklist=1 quiet splash apm=off

I did see some messages which indicate perhaps pcie_aspm=off might help, but you might want to see if you can update the BIOS/UEFI first.

Code: Select all

Dec 05 00:36:39 andrew-GL65-Leopard-10SFK kernel: ACPI FADT declares the system doesn't support PCIe ASPM, so disable it
Dec 05 00:36:39 andrew-GL65-Leopard-10SFK kernel: acpi PNP0A08:00: FADT indicates ASPM is unsupported, using BIOS configuration
There were some lines about you apparently sending an xrandr request that does not work properly for your system. I do not know if that might relate to system instability.
