Under LM Cinnamon go to LM menu, System Info, it will give you your distro.

fire up the ol' terminal and run inxi -Sr, or inxi -Fxz and look at the top.

Not sure what you mean by 'control' the release, it'll stay installed until you upgrade or reinstall. Maybe English isn't your 1st language?

Most likely: check. In many European languages, there is a word that is from the same root as 'control', but means 'to see what the status is', not 'to hold things in restraint'.
And Jørn Rudolph is quite open about his country of residence. Easy as pie to know.

"Control" is a normal word in Danish : "Kontrollere" Means "Tjeck out" - "See, what is happening" - Not a hard word.

another way, just hover over the Menu icon.

and another, hostnamectl
Mint 20.0, and 21.0 MATE on Thinkpads, 3 X T420, T450, T470, and X200

And here is another very brief terminal commandline, which will reveal the cosmic top secret piece of information which Linux Mint release and desktop environment you are using: inxi -Sxxx
