One of your software sources is incorrect.
please open a terminal and enter the following:

Code: Select all

mintupdate
Copy those results and paste them in a reply.
Everything is difficult before it gets easy.

You have a bad entry in your sources.

If you open Software Sources from the Menu then go to both PPAs & Additional Repositories tab then 1 of the entries there is incorrect.

You can temporarily suspend a source by unticking it. (See a copy of my additional repositories).

Updating the cache on Software Sources will inform you if the issue has been solved.
If you re-add the sources 1 at a time then you will discover which source is causing the issue.
You will need to delete that source & find the correct URL for it if you still want it to be active..

How will I know which is incorrect?

Unselect all & then add back in 1 at a time.
When you update the cache on Software Sources it will try to contact the sources that you have and report an error if it can't..

Nothig works.
The issue arose when I tried to install FireFox but didn't manage because of some error. I followed this guide:

Code: Select all

What does that mean - we are not looking at your screen, you have to tell us so we can understand.

Are you saying that if you turn off all additional sources that Update Manager still does not work??
If so, what happens when you tell it (in Software Sources first page) to "Restore the default settings" as well..

Why did you need to install Firefox? Mint comes with Firefox by default!!
The tutorial you tried to follow is 4 years old - a great deal happens to an Operating System in 4 years, especially concerning Firefox & Mint as their were Ubuntu Snap issues involved!!

Forget those silly "instructions", which claim to be smart, but only proof, that the author did not understand the topic. And quite obviously create trouble, which did not exist before. Undo all changes which you did. Mint itself provides you the current versions of Firefox.

Besides that: We still do not know, about which version of Mint and which desktop we are talking.
Gotcha!

I wish I knew how.

I use 20.1 Cinamon and an Acer laptop.

Yes, I turned them off all and it didn't work.

When I tell Software Sources to "Restore the default settings" the same error occurs.

You wrote "I followed that guide". So follow it again, but in the opposite direction.

Or:
Restore your system with a Timeshift snapshot.
Gotcha!

I don't have any snapshot.

I think I'll just leave it as it is, I can still use my laptop and that's all I care about. Thanks, guys.

Then, sorry, I am at a loss as to how to cure it.
If all additional sources have been turned off & you have returned to the default repositories & it doesn't work then I agree with Cosmo that a return to a Timeshift snapshot before you undertook this install is probably your only hope of saving this system.

If you don't use Timeshift then a re-install is probably your only option - after you have saved any personal data..

That would mean that you would not get any security updates.
That is a very dangerous state to continue to react with the outside world as you are leaving yourself exposed to any newly discovered system flaws..

What is this for a kind of logic? At first you follow an (idiotic) instruction for getting allegedly the latest FF version and then you end with a system, that is only good for acting as a magnet for security leaks!

That you did not use the build-in security belt of Mint was your decision, but this matches somehow with this seldom kind of logic. I bet, that you know the word backup also only from reading.

Note, that without doing anything the support time for your system has ended at this point. :x No updates = no support. Your system is not better than any Mint version older than 19.x.

Hello, Voytek Ian Niznik.

The screenshot in your initial post clearly tells that there is a syntactically incorrect entry on line 9 of the file /etc/apt/sources.list.
  • Please, open a terminal window.
  • Execute the commandline

    Code: Select all

    inxi -Sr
precisely as it has been typed here.
Mark the complete text output, which the command will display with your mouse. Press <Shift><Ctrl>c to copy the marked text.
Paste it into your next reply.
  • Next execute the commandline

    Code: Select all

    cat /etc/apt/sources.list
precisely as it has been typed here.
Mark the complete text output, which the command will display with your mouse. Press <Shift><Ctrl>c to copy the marked text.
Paste it into your next reply.
This should help determine how to correct your software sources.

Regards,
Karl
