Update Manager can't connect to Medibuntu packages

I'm running Mint 12.
The Update Manager icon keeps changing from a green tick to a red cross, and shows these errors:

ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR
W:Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/one ... slation-en Unable to connect to packages.medibuntu.org:http:
, W:Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/one ... slation-en Unable to connect to packages.medibuntu.org:http:
, E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

The last few lines of sudo apt-get update are:

Err http://packages.medibuntu.org oneiric/free Translation-en_GB

cat /etc/apt/sources.list showed:

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ lisa main upstream import
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ oneiric partner
deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ oneiric free non-free

but since following the suggestionsin this link,
cat /etc/apt/sources.list now shows:

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ lisa main upstream import
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ oneiric partner
#deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ oneiric free non-free

#deb http://archive.removed/ubuntu oneiric-removed apps
#deb http://archive.removed/ubuntu oneiric-removed games

So the last three lines will be ignored and therefore not updated?
Or do the errors indicate a problem with the Medibuntu site?

Confirmed, although I am using Mint Isadora and therefore the lucid repository at Medibuntu. It has been unreachable for two days now!

The main Medibuntu repository is down. You can use a mirror.

In Software Sources edit the entry for the Medibuntu repository. Change http://packages.medibuntu.org to http://mirrors.ucr.ac.cr/medibuntu/ . Ensure you do not amend the details of your distribution and free non-free.

Close the repository window and reload.

This works for me. When the main repository is working you can change it back.

I found this workaround:
In a terminal, enter: gksu gedit /etc/hosts and add 88.191.101.8 packages.medibuntu.org to the file.
I put it above the commented out lines
Save the file.
Works for me (at present)

I had the same problem.

I solved it by editing /etc/apt/sources.list (Open as administrator)
Then i changed the line:
deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ oneiric free non-free

to:
deb http://se.packages.medibuntu.org/ oneiric free non-free
(SE is closest mirror to me).

And now both the GUI tool and also "apt-get update" works without any errors.

I hope others can use this as well.

I have also edited the file: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
It now has this:
## Please report any bug on https://bugs.launchpad.net/medibuntu/
#deb hhttp://www.medibuntu.org/medibuntu/ oneiric free non-free #Medibuntu - Ubuntu 11.10 "oneiric ocelot"
deb-src http://se.packages.medibuntu.org/ oneiric free non-free #Medibuntu (source) - Ubuntu 11.10 "oneiric ocelot"

In other words I have but in a # on 1 line and removed it from another... and changed that line to use se.packages... as well.

But this last was not enough to solve the problem, hence I did the first I mentioned as well.

I hope this wil help others with the same problem.

Regards
Thomas

Update Manager worked fine today, so I'll mark this thread as solved.

It is not solved because http://packages.medibuntu.org does not work. We have described workarounds in the thread above but there is still a problem with the main Medibuntu repository.

I stand corrected, my workaround didn't work
I've now applied the "se" mirror, but how will we know if and when the "proper" repository is active again?
Will it just be trial and error?

You can also replace http://packages.medibuntu.com with http://88.191.101.8 instead of putting it in the hosts file. Also, if a mirror works for you, you don't really need to go back to the main repository.

Medibuntu has never been down for me. But a few users keep reporting problems with it. You'd probably better contact your ISP and say that packages.medibuntu.org is unreachable for you.

Is there any difference between doing it this way and putting it in the hosts file? Just interested.
After putting it in the host file, today I still got the original error.
If adding the mirror doesn't work, I'll take it up with my ISP, as suggested.

You have a typo: medibuntu.com . Interesting to see that someone has registered the domain waiting for typos. ;)

This has nothing to do with ISPs or IP address because http://packages.medibuntu.org is reachable but Update Manager cannot access it. Maybe a problem with the authentication key?

You're right. I made a typo. It's indeed medibuntu.org instead of .com.
