X windows will not load from HD or Live CD

Post by rlowe1980 »

I just recently bought a new pc. i took my the hd with Mint and put itn in my new pc so i didnt have re-install. well, Mint boots up, but drops to shell before it gets to the login prompt. i tried pulling out harware to see if there was a problem with my new pc, but i had no success.

after awhile, i just decided to re-install Mint from the live CD. well s**t, i get the same results when i boot to the live CD now! it drops to shell before i get to the login prompt.. i spoke with someone else about this and they told me i'm stuck with Windows XP.. haha!! i really dont want to have to do that..

Have you tried loading x with a different driver for your graphics card?

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
find your graphic card section
and try using the vesa driver or if that is what is loading try the i810 driver (not sure if that is on the live cd or not as I dont use intel)
you could also try using a 800x600 resolution if it is set to something higher than the driver you are using supports?
