The Debian ISO isn't a BETA it's an ALPHA (doesn't come with an installer for instance) and it might eventually grow into a community edition. The package base for all other editions is Ubuntu and Daryna is pointing at Gutsy in particular.

Hi TekNoir,

Most Ubuntu improvements make their way into Linux Mint, but not all. For instance the printing management in Gutsy wasn't added to Daryna.

Now, onto what is "based on" what :) The problem with saying that B is "based on" A is that it is ambiguous. It doesn't really mean anything precise. Does it mean that B "came from modifications made on" A? Or does it mean that B is actually a "layer running on top of" A?

We "forked" from Edgy. Since then every Mint release "came from modifications made on" the previous release. For instance, right now we're building Elyssa... by modifying Daryna.

But we also "run on top of" the package base provided by Ubuntu. Basically, almost every part of the system is made of packages, and we take our packages from Ubuntu repositories.

So for instance, if we look at how Elyssa is being made:

- We take Daryna
- We make all the changes we planned to make in Elyssa (new tools, improvements, pointing at elyssa repositories..etc)
- We make it point to Hardy repositories and we upgrade its package base (apt upgrade & dist-upgrade)
- We reapply a few settings defined for Mint which get overwritten by Ubuntu while performing the upgrade
- We make changes to the default software selection (Ubuntu improvements, upstream improvements, new apps ..etc).

So technically the following statements are true:
- Elyssa is based on Daryna (since it came from modifications made on it)
- Elyssa is based on Hardy (since it runs on top of Hardy's package base -- we're using APT pinning for this so we're really sitting on top of Ubuntu here)

I can understand why people are confused. Fortunately this is quite transparent to the user when running Linux Mint and the only tricky times are when it comes to upgrading. Hopefully we'll come with a tool to automate this process in Linux Mint 6.
