So you are left with a situation when at gdm you get a message that you have the wrong password, but not in a shell?
Or is the message really something else?
Can you start X from "tty" (startx)?
I'm thinking you accidentally messed up so X cannot be started.
In "tty" do

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and check that the driver is set as "vesa" (in Section "Device" - there is only one such section)
If not change it and hopefully you can log in.
Vesa is a "always working but sloppy" driver
Envy usually works well - but you could try the "Restricted manager"
