Heating problems on HP Probook 4720s

Post by velzorro »

Hello world!

I am a new here. I have installed Linux Mint 13, Cinnamon, on my laptop. I have this laptop for abiut a year an 3 months. I used Windows 7 ultimate an Ubuntu 12.04 till now, but today I have cleaned the entire hdd, so my laptop looks like a new one.
I had troubles in Ubuntu with heating, 60 degrees celsius was a normal temperature, while in win 7 I have reached more than 40 degrees.
It seems I have the same problem with the new installed linux mint. The cooler is all the time working in an alert way.
Please help me with some solutions.

PS. excuse my English...

It may be a graphics related issue. Please run inxi -Gx in terminal and post the output here.

That looks good. Maybe you could post some more data by running lspci for example? The laptop looks a bit different from other ProBook 4720s's that I've found on Google. HP often sells laptops with different hardware inside the same chassis.

I don't see any problematic device listed. You can try upgrading to the Linux 3.3 kernel (http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=40185) but that would require reinstalling the graphics driver.

Thanks for support!

I have another problem and I forgot to say it. I can not install ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates). I receive an error something like /var/log/jockey.log . This might me a cause?

Please try the normal driver version instead of post-release. IN your inxi -Gx output, that driver was already installed.
If that one doesn't work either you can get the driver from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/l ... linux.aspx.

I use the normal driver. i can not install post release updates. I thought this might be the problem. Excuse me for being wrong.
I will update the kernel.

Please run gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. In that file please add: blacklist b43.

You shouldn't need the STA driver anymore after doing that. Please uninstall it and run sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-bcm43.conf.

I still have problems with my laptop...
I had run the commands in the terminal but still no result. I think this may be a hardware problem. Do you think I should consider buying a coolerpad for my laptop, even if it doesn't have that tiny holes (the ventilation grid)?

PS:After upgrading the kernel at 3.3.7, the laptop's fan is running even faster...

I am back at square one, with 3.2.0 kernel. I have downloaded the ATI driver and I want to install it, but it has a weird extension (run).
How do I manage to install this?

From terminal, sudo sh amd*.run (assuming it's the only driver install in that directory)

your results:
john@Ionut-HP-ProBook-4720s ~ $ inxi -Gx
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Robson CE [AMD Radeon HD 6300 Series] bus-ID: 01:00.0
X.Org: 1.11.3 drivers: ati,fglrx (unloaded: vesa,fbdev,radeon) Resolution: 1600x900@60.1hz
GLX Renderer: AMD Radeon HD 6300M Series GLX Version: 4.2.11627 - CPC Direct Rendering: Yes

My results:
dan@dan1 ~ $ inxi -Gx
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI BeaverCreek [Radeon HD 6550D] bus-ID: 00:01.0
X.Org: 1.11.3 driver: fglrx Resolution: 1600x1200@85.0hz
GLX Renderer: AMD Radeon HD 6550D GLX Version: 4.2.11733 - CPC Direct Rendering: Yes

as you can see, you have two drivers loaded, ati, fglrx, while I have only one.
Did you install the open source fglrx or the proprietary Catalyst fglrx ?
The open source fglrx might use the ati wrapper, while the Catalyst does not.
One thing I know for certain - the Catalyst fglrx driver gives much better performance than the open source one, and that could solve your problem.
With Catalyst you are supposed to remove any pre-existing drivers before installing the fglrx driver.

I see where you said you did not have the Catalyst driver installed.
I am sorry. I was pressed for time and didn't see that.
I believe that is something that would help.
I will help if I can.
Let us know where you are with that.

From my experience with my Radeon/fglrx, I would expect that getting the Catalyst driver installed and then upgrading your kernel would take care of your overheating.
Note: I had graphics related problems until I installed the 3.3 kernel !

Upgrading the kernel is very easy.
the 3.3 kernel:
http://www.upubuntu.com/2012/05/how-to- ... a-ppa.html
the 3.5 kernel:
http://www.upubuntu.com/2012/07/install ... pa-on.html

I have not tried the 3.5 kernel. I am doing great with the 3.3.
I have heard good things about 3.5, tho.

The Linux 3.5 kernel is capable of delivering some massive performance gains for some of the more recent generations of ATI/AMD Radeon graphics processors. Here's some benchmarks...

ati is nothing to worry about. If you have open-source it is indeed used as wrapper but with the proprietary driver it won't do anything. It happens often that ati still appears.
