Thanks Vincent, good to see some fixes are in progress.

Do you know if they will fix the issue that people have mentioned of the progress bar getting stuck at a certain point (about 16%)? As this is something I experience quite regularly too.

That is probably a symptom of either of the other two issues. I'm not sure if this will be fixed by the improvements being done, but glebihan is doing his best to give us an improved Software Manager and a lot of things are being done. One of these is that interface to the APT back-end (that does the actual installation) has been replaced, hopefully this should improve progress reporting also.

There is also a 3rd problem, but it's with Package Managers other half, the Update Manager. Here's one of the threads about it.
