unresponsive system needs reboot - maya cinnamon x64

Post by dhdurgee »

I recently started seeing new and unwelcome behavior on my desktop system running maya cinnamon x64. A few days ago when I came into the office in the morning and switched my a/b/c/d switch to that system I found the system unresponsive to any keyboard or mouse activity, so I hit the reset button and rebooted. A few hours later I ran into a similar situation. Prior to this time I would get the prompt for password entry after hitting any key on the keyboard when I left the system alone for more than 10 minutes. System was NOT set to suspend. I changed the "brightness and lock" settings to disable the lock and the problem has not occurred again.

Has there been a recent update that might cause this? Is there a way to figure out where the problem is? The current settings avoid the unresponsive system, but allows access to the system without password entry.

Hi Dave,

I have to assume that your "a/b/c/d switch" is a KVM switch (Keyboard Video Mouse).

Is it possible to disconnect this computer from the KVM and run it like that for a few days (i.e. having the actual keyboard and monitor physically plugged into the machine in question)?

I have experienced a wide range of problems with both Linux and Windows and KVMs (everything from the keyboard generating errors to video distortions)

I am aware of some KVM issues, in particular keys seem to "stick" on occasion, but this had been working fine for several months without similar behavior until a few days ago. It would be difficult to separate the system out for its own keyboard/mouse/video, as this is in a small office and I have no place to put another keyboard/mouse/monitor for the system. I am still suspicious that an update that came in recently caused this, as there was no problem for several months with it.

Hi Dave,

Definately not saying you are wrong. I was trying to isolate the problem. Have you checked syslog or dmesg? Can you ping it from another computer when it is in a frozen state? If so, can you ssh/putty into it?

I'm having similar issues, no KVM here. Still searching the forums, this thread;

looks promising, about to read it now.

I finally had another one of these freezes. I used ssh -X from another system and got in. I was able to start an x app via ssh, specifically fcl. Looking in /var/log showed a few things:

/var/log/syslog:

There is also Xorg.0.log, but I don't see that timestamped in a way I could discern what is of interest. As noted above, I have a crash file if anyone can look at it and discern something. Interestingly, the system is no longer frozen. So perhaps the ssh caused corrective action to be taken. Thank you for the suggestion of using ssh.

How big is the crash file?

I have to deal with these from time to time at work. I can have a look, though it appears that the problem is actually with cinnamon.

You could try installing a different Desktop Environment such as XFCE, LXDE, Mate, Gnome-Shell etc and see if the problem continues

There was definitely a problem with cinnamon as something called for it to be shut down. I would hazard a guess that you stumbled over a bug

It is not a frequent problem, as you can note from the post history. The crash file is 69M zipped as saved by the crash logger. If I were to run apport-retrace against it that would undoubtably grow it a bit.
