linux Mint 13 on Virtual Box 4.2

Post by vzaffiro » Sun Nov 11, 2012 11:51 am

I have Linux Mint installed on VirtualBox 4.2 with 3d acceleration turned on and the OS is running extremely slow. When 3D acceleration is turned off, cinnamon doesn't load and the user experience is responsive. Once 3D acceleration is turned the UI just comes to a halt. I purchased my laptop this year (2012) and has enough power to play the latest games so it shouldn't have a problem with running cinnamon. I am thinking its a configuration on my side.
Can anyone provide any guidance?

Host OS:
Fairly clean install of Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.
HP Laptop Pavilion dv6
8 gig of Ram
i7-3610QM (4 cores) with 8 logical processors
Power settings are turned on to full

Virtualbox settings:
Guest Additions are installed.
Base Memory: 4096 MB
Processors: 4 CPUs
Execution Cap: 100%
Acceleration: both Enable VT-x/AMD-V and Enable Nested Paging is checked.

Video Memory: 128 MB (Max)
Enable 3D Acceleration is selected

The problem is virtual box, running in linux is slow too...

Try a Linuxmint LIveDVD
Del Inspiron 5480, Quad-core, Core I5 8th Gen, Geforce MX 150,
LM 19.2 Cinnamon

Ridiculous. I have Mint 13 MATE running in VB 4.2.2 on a Toshiba laptop under Win 7, dual core AMD chip, and the Virtual Mint runs like a top. I have the VM set for 2 CPUs, 65% execution cap, 3D accel turned on. It's way faster than a Live DVD. It's very responsive, in fact.

Until a few days ago I had one LM13 Cinnamon 64bit VM running inside VB 4.2.x on my Debian host and it worked quite as fast as if it was installed on real hardware. 2 virtual CPUs, not capped, 128MB video RAM, 4GB reserved RAM, all available accels on.

Make sure that the virtual disk and network interfaces are set to virtio.
Main desktop: Debian GNU/Linux Jessie 64bit - MATE
(i5 2400@3.7GHz - 16GB DDR3 - HD6770 w/radeon driver - SSD+RAID1)
Safer than Dropbox
