need help. i have live usb linux mint 14. do i need to login each time i boot into linux?how? is the gufw firewall settings accessible? when i go system/admin there is no ucon for firewall? how do i enter to enable it?

You will have to enable gufw every time you boot, yes. Just open gufw, and click on 'Unlock' in the bottom-right corner. It will open a pop-up for your password, then you can change things in gufw. Here is a link on gufw:
