Media players do this automatically, why do you want to use a file manager?

Try 'ex falso' for modifying music metadata. You can find it in the software repository.

Or you can try VLC in playlist mode. That allows you to arrange music the way you want.

I want to compile my music collection so if I share music files I know what I or the other person has so I don't get a bunch of duplicates, last time I got music I had 8000 songs but 1500 of them were duplicates. Also my media files are pretty messed up most of the tags are things like "102track7" and I'm super OCD so I want to fix them. Ie, if I can group them together by artist I can change there file names to what the name of the song is as an album rather then going through each and every song and doing it that way. I'll try what you were saying mfludder thanks.

Yep use a program that is designed to help fix and organize those kind of things.
Have used Banshee and now Clementine as running KDE. But allows me to fix the metadata and organize my collection.
Which has grown to 1000+ CD's and 30,000+ tracks last 20 years of adding to it.

Banshee - Gnome

Amarok - KDE
Clementine - KDe

Sure others will chime in with there favorites.
But trying to correct the problem by file manager means is problematic at best.

When I import folders containg .MP3-files in Banshee, Banshee only arrange albums and songs by artist's and album name in the browser when they are listed inside the .MP3 file as an ID3-tag. When this metadata is not present in the .MP3-file, the browser only lists "unknown artist" or "unknown album". This problem is mentioned at http://askubuntu.com/questions/54599/un ... -all-music . Why doesn't Banshee arrange the artist's and album name by the directory and the filename of the .MP3-file itself?

puddletag is a great program for manipulating metadata, and can operate on a list of files.

But on the other hand WinAmp also arranges .MP3-files by by artist's and album name even when no ID3-metadatatags are available in an MP3-file. WinAmps arranges them by simply looking to their directory and file names only. It would be a great thing if Banshee would arrange .MP3-files on the same way like WinAmp does.
