Maya Problem - cannot access desktop items

Post by velky_pivo » Thu Mar 07, 2013 5:54 pm

OS: Mint Maya 64bit Mate desktop

My problem started after I copied over my /home/user directory to the backup usb drive,.
I changed permissions for that home directory before copying to usb.

When I started the PC next time, i first got a message :

"User's $HOME/.dmrc file is being ignored. This prevents the default session and language from being saved.
File should be owned by user and have 644 permissions.
User's home directory must be owned by user and not writable by other users."

I changed the permissions, probably wrong way, and now my Maya desktop shows nothing on it,
no menu icon, and I cannot even get to the command/shell line.

I also got 2 other messages afterwards :

"Could not update ICEauthority file /home/user1/.ICEauthority"

and a complaint about not being able to write linuxmint directory file with bookmarks because it could not write to it.

How do I fix this ?

In the meantime, I was able to change permissions on directories to 755 and files to 644.
All is back to normal now, except that during chmod file and directory, I received following

find: `/home/user1/.gvfs': Permission denied

What the heck is .gvfs, and is this a problem ?

Thanks

Ok, so .gvfs is a gnome virtual file system, and it is a hidden directory under the user's directory, and it appears to be empty.
Even when doing sudo chmod 755, it will not set write permission on it, making it user-read,execute only, and no permissions else.
The owner is shown to be user, not root.

Can somebody comment on why the empty .gvfs directory is needed, and why the permissions can't be changed ?

Here's a great tutorial on permissions and kinda what you were, or are going through. Seven pages of one of the best tutorials I have found.
Solving .dmrc and $HOME Permission Errors
It completely fixed my problems with permissions.
Thanks
