i had tried linux cinnamon on friends PC and thought it great - s must have replacement for VIsta on one of our laptops.

i downloaded a copy, all looked great but i cant get my Wifi internet, and it wont let me download anything, or at least anything i can open.

any very basic suggestions please, i am not IT literate

Hello jim maclinux and welcome to Mint,
It would be helpful to know what wireless card is in you machine.

if you do not know you can go to a terminal and type Then post the results here.
will try to help. Is it possible to get a hardwire connection (Ethernet)? if so it may be a simple as installing the correct drivers for your
card.

i forgot to mention, i can get internet on a hard wire connection - other pc's in house are still getting wireless

Connect with wire. Open terminal and do.
Reboot and try if wireless works.

no luck - wireless stil not operating - this is what i got when i ran the text- mentions a segmentation fault at the end if that is significant

I don't like to jump in on threads where people are already getting help but I'll make an exception to get you running quickly. You will need to plug that machine into a wired lan and do this in a terminal: That should be all that's needed.

From the output you posted i see that you have over 500 packages that's not upgraded. Do an upgrade with: Then we can try to get it working again. firmware-b43-installer should work to get that card going.

Hello Jim.

I have installed many laptops and all works with Wlan/Wifi.

My installed Mint 12 lisa and Mint 14 Cinnamon linuxes,them have drivers for Wlan/Wifi.

I always use live DVD to install and test it first starting from live DVD ,then can use wlan as started.

Look your wlan modem,there are SSID:(ZyXEL1560wzp my modem)look your type.
Wireless key: xxxxxxxx ,if there key you need it.

Go to panel down right side connect,click with mouse left buttom.
Connection settings/wireless connections.
Select your modem type you see on modem SSID:xxxxxx
Options/autoconnect put x,not more here.
Go to wireless security,here use for password your wireless key and look there are setted WPA&WPA2 (personal).
If there was that wireless key it's ready and save it.
If not wireless key use same WPA&WPA2 and make key,then it's protected.

when i try to run "apt install firmware-b43-installer" it tellsme to run "sudo dpkg ..£ when i do that i get following message, and my hard line connection gets dropped

when i rebooted an icon bottom right indicated there was a new version of update manager available- i started that and it attenpted to download then gave message "'E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

still not geting anywhere - really need help

OK chaps, i have given up trying to sort this out - Vista might be a crock of **** but at least I could get connected by wifi
