mint 15 cinnamon crashes

Post by shootist »

I have successfully used Mint 13 and 14. I recently installed 15 cinnamon and it crashed from time to time. When I say crash I mean the display either shows nothing but white or is all scrambled. Any idea why it would be doing this?

My Cinnamon started crashing to the login window and having weird grpahical glitches. I asked on the linuxmint-help channel and it was suggested I go Menu>System Settings>Device Drivers. I had the default, top option (recommended) selected. Choosing the updates option initiated the AMD drivers install , so I had the Catalyst Control Centre after a reboot. This remedied the crashing and glitches. I understand it is the same for Nvidia graphics.
If you have hybrid graphics the solution is a bit more involved, something called Bumblebee I understand.
So the first question is what graphics card do you have?

I believe my motherboard is an AMD with the generic built in video card. Is there any way to double check?

NVIDIA GeForce 7025. The only option it gives me is an update for NVIDIA 304 or recommended. Mine was on something else. I'll try that and see.

Had a similar problem with fresh install of Mint 15.

Code: Select all

$ dmesg
shows nouveau error ("fail ttm_validate"). The problem got solved by installing the proprietary nVidia drivers:

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
If this does not work for you, go to tty1 & try

Code: Select all

 $ sudo pkill -SIGHUP cinnamon
instead of cinnamon --replace. This will merely redraw all windows rather than killing them. But browser downloads tend to get prematurely terminated.

(Running AMD Turion 64 processor notebook with nVidia GeForce 6150 card)
