64 bit processors

Postby dnmint » Fri Jul 04, 2008 11:38 pm

I have a Desktop Compaq Pressrio 6620 with Intel Core2 Duo processor.
I have a Dell D420- Latitude Laptop with Intel Centrino Duo processor ( not Core2Duo)
Which of them is 64 bit, if any.
Should I use 64 bit Mint or 32 bit one?
Thanks for help

There is no 64 bit version of mint yet. It may happen in the future. Both your computers should work fine with mint.

I believe that Clem mentioned attempting to release a 64 bit version before October if I heard correctly. Do a search in the forums.

My two cents: Unless you do CPU intensive calculations (as in 3D solid modeling), the benefit you will get from 64 bit is negligible. So, I advise you to carry on with a 32 bit OS.

I run OpenSuSE 64 on one of my laptops now, I am quite pleased. Currently in the process of customizing it, been a while since I have used OpenSuSE and much has changed in 11, but I am loving it right now. It is right up there among my favorite distributions, worth looking into if you want a 64 bit distribution.

Core Duo = 32 bit
Core2 Duo = 64 bit
