[Solved]File is not owned by you error

Post by Cmiller21 »

So I am trying to configure wine after its installation, but I get this error:

Code: Select all

cody@cody-Inspiron-M5030 ~ $ sudo winecfg
wine: /home/cody/.wine is not owned by you
I'm sure this is easily fixable with a few commands, so can somebody tell me how to make this directory owned by my user account.

Give this a try:

Code: Select all

chown cody /home/cody/.wine

Suggested modification:

Code: Select all

sudo chown -R cody:cody /home/cody/.wine
sudo is needed, because cody cannot grant himself access rights on objects not owned by himself.
-R makes sure that not only the folder .wine, but everything inside the folder is given away to cody, too.
cody:cody makes sure that owner and group will be corrected.

Cf. "man chown"

I tried the terminal code, it still shows same results. Not sure what is happening. However, maybe this will be useful in helping me:

Code: Select all

cody@cody-Inspiron-M5030 ~ $ ls -al ~ | grep wine
drwxr-xr-x 4 cody cody 4096 Nov 27 14:54 .wine
I am confused, it says I own the file, yet I still can't open it.

Prefixing sudo is not always the right thing to do.
Wine folder .wine is owned by cody. So winecfg wants to be run by cody, not by root. This is by design.

Okay, I typed winecfg without sudo, and it opened up wine configuration. Thanks. Learned a bit more about Linux :)
