/usr/bin/mint --fortune: no such file (No GUI interface)

Post by Jerry »

Hi. Firstly, I hope that the above title is correct. I was unsure of what correct Subject to post this tread at.
Secondly, I have Googled around the net for the current challenge that I am facing. I have also looked around this board to see if there is anything that is somewhat related; however, there does not seem to be anything that is. Unless I've missed it.
Currently (or was), using Mint 15 (Cinnamon).
I have 64 bit OS on a multi-Linux Operating System Boot configuration (5 in total)
Architecture: x86_64

Recently while logged into Mint, I noticed that Terminal would not launch and then I noticed that the Cinnamon Control Settings were missing. Not too sure how that happened to begin with; however, I did come across a posting on the net suggesting a simple command in Terminal to (hopefully) reinstall that missing piece of software - the Control Settings for Cinnamon. ( I would Google around on how to fix the missing Terminal later and then get it up and running again).

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install --reinstall-cinnamon
There after was a download of about 30mB. For some unknown reason that download uninstalled Dropbox and a number of other programs.

I re-logged in to Cinnamon Mint and was greeted not by the usual Mint logo, but by a pink/purple Ubuntu 15 sceen.
There after the black screen with message

Code: Select all

-bash: /usr/bin/mint --fortune: No such fie.
LinuxMint15 Olivia frankenstein-desktop tty1
If memory serves me correct, I believe I was able to log in with username/password. Including root as well.
However, I am kind of stumped on what happened, why, and how to get Mint back up and running.
Sorry, but a re-install is out of the question.
I can access Mint files/folders from other operating systems though.

This is what the grub for mint looks like. I don't see any 'text' to indicate a non-quiet-splash'

Code: Select all

Re: /usr/bin/mint --fortune: no such file (No GUI interface)

Update: tried doing

Code: Select all

sudo service lightdm restart
No go.
Still don't have a GUI to both login as well as to work with. Only get the textual interface and that's all.
Still looking at getting this resolved.
May you have good thermals.

got in via Startx.
should have known this to begin with. Duh.
did an update and miracolously, I got back what must have been deleted last time for some unknown reason. Finally managed to get the graphical interface too. Relogged out and back in.
I have no idea what was going on now. All I saw was a black screen but cursor movable.
Too frustrated to try to resolve this issue.
Just did a re-install of the whole system
May you have good thermals.
