Strange / corrupt characters, annoying.

Post by parkoro » Thu Dec 26, 2013 5:29 pm

I keep getting weird characters showing up, mainly in firefox but also notice it in other programs.
when you highlight the words with your mouse... it gets redrawn and they are fine.
Tried searching, sounds similar to this bug report - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1214051

Also sometimes when using menus in programs, there is a black background and it turns white when you hover the mouse over the options...

I'm using ATI 7950 graphics card with opensource drivers, if that helps any..

Any ideas on this?

Parkoro !
I am glad you have this problem...so do I.
I was thinking that my laptop was tired and I was shopping around to buy a new one...

So this is not my laptop and I am not alone.
The problem started 10 days ago, after installing Petra.
I use only FFox.
It's not often I would say once every hour

Now I will check exactly when and where I get the problem

 It happened right now..On my sentence "It's not often I w uld say once every 2hours"
The "o" of would...
But when I activated the camera for a snapshot, the problem disappears.

For sure extraterrestrials are involved they do not want we make pictures.

Cordially

Thanks for the reply! Same here with that too..
When I go to hit the cinnamon "menu" button to go select the snapshot program.. the alien characters go away !!

It is similar to that thread.

I'm not using Intel graphics though.. using opensource drivers for 7950

So, I'm not sure of a fix.. & I don't want to install propietary drivers.

Is there something specific to ati that I should place in my xorg.conf.d file ??

EDIT: Well after some more searching, the only other info I can find that may help is this:

The above "EXAPixmaps" "off" for ati radeon did not work, still corrupt letters.

Hello,
On my side the problem is solved with my Intel card.
Below I sum up how to fix the problem. (If you want more details: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 4&start=40 )

You need to add/modify a file(20-intel.conf) at the address : USR/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

If xorg.conf.d doesnot exist, create it.
This file 20-intel.conf contents :

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
       Identifier "Intel Graphics"
       Driver "intel"
       Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
    EndSection
How to get there ?
Files System-->USR (Right click on USR and"Open as Root")
Share
X11/
xorg.conf.d
Inside xorg.conf.d create/copy a file : 20-intel.conf

Then Reboot

Thank you everyone.
