Help! Unable to boot

Postby alanstanley » Fri Aug 01, 2008 4:32 pm

I have been running elyssa happily since release until this evening when for no apparent reason I am not able to boot and receive the following message,

Unexpected inconsistency
Run fsck manually
fsck died with exit status 4

File system check failed.
A log is being saved in /var/log/fsck/checkfs if that location is writable.
Please repair the file system manually.

A maintenance shell will now be started.
CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and resume system boot.
Give root password for maintenance or type Control-D to continue.
Modprobe WARNING not loading blacklisted module ipv6

I have tried typing CONTROL - D and Control - D, have tried my password, but all I get is a blinking cursor, no sign of ant typing happening, and Login incorrect when I press return.......

Can anybody help?

I think it means press the control key (Ctrl) and "d" together. Does it still give problems after resuming boot?
...and that should work...theoretically.

UPDATE - problem solved Re: Help! Unable to boot

This morning during the boot process the routine check of drives utility kicked in - after which Elyssa booted up as normal. Was the problem caused by me frequently skipping the drive check out of lack of patience?!

Possibly ... I have seen a lot of people who say they always skip the fsck of their drives ... it's done for a reason ... so you should let it run !
In the old UNIX days we had to do this manually if we had problems mounting devices .. today it is done from the startup scripts, so let it run, it's there
to make your life easier ... ;)

So, the best way to get out of this situaion is to boot your machine from the Mint Live CD.
Once you are at the desktop, open a terminal from the main menu and then run the following command replacing /dev/sdax with your drive details :

Code: Select all

sudo fsck -y /dev/sdax

Do this for each of your partitions ...

It should repair any problems automagically ...

Once done ... reboot the system normally from the hard drive and all should be well ...

Mike.
