This very annoying (but tiny) problem! [SOLVED!]

Post by mkqx » Fri Jan 10, 2014 5:43 pm

Image
On the menu bar, all other icons are white in the tray (expect VLC/ alarm clock) but transmission and pidgin seem to be blacked out...
On my previous installation of Petra this wasn't the case, they were the same as the system icons.. (I re-installed due to me messing around with terminal too much!) -*edit* on Cinnamon Mint 16

Any help on how to get both these icons so they are uniform with the sound/ wireless/ battery etc, or a push in the right direction would be great!

Thanks :)

Yep default icons especially 3rd party apps can be problematic when changing themes especially dark themes.
Can edit program properties and look for "Change Icon" for a more suitable compliant icon and change it.

Vlc shouldn't be an issue. Don't know about time tho.
I use KDE so have all those icon text colors changeable in system settings.
Don't know about Cinnamon or Mate tho.

You can change to different icons with System Settings > Themes > Other Settings > Icons

ways to get new icons:

1) From the Mint repository using Synaptic.
I prefer the Neu icons, found in the gnome-themes-extras package. There are many more in the repository, such as
human-theme
human-icon-theme
humanity-icon-theme
gnome-human-icon-theme
gnome-colors
gnome-wine-icon-theme
gnome-wise-icon-theme

2) If you want to download and install other icon sets, the first step is to make an .icons folder

Code: Select all

mkdir /home/user/.icons
Download and copy new icon sets into that folder.
You can find more icon sets here:

Not sure if my fix is relevant but all I had for pidgin in the tray was a black on black blob. I'm using Mint-X (Ambiance Mint). I think that's the spelling, either way its in Mint-X folder.

I found that the icons that are in \usr\share\pixmaps\pidgin\tray\Mint-X\status\22 are not the same icons as are in the 32 folder. If you size your panel to more than 36 pixels or so, you'll see the Pidgin icons start working, or at least I did. But that's a bit big.
I just scaled the png icons in 32 folder to 22 pixels and put them in the 22 folder. Same names. Bingo, that fixed my mint 16 cinnamon.

I put this here as an alternate
Linux Mint 18.3 and/or 19.x Cinnamon 64-bit. Dual boot with Windows 10
