Can't log out of user accounts - Petra <SOLVED>

Post by ausminter »

Hi everyone

I recently installed the 64 bit Petra with the Cinnamon desktop from an ISO I downloaded from a local mirror listed on the Linux Mint download page.

Overall I'm quite impressed the latest incarnation of Mint with Cinnamon except for one small issue where I can't logout of user accounts. I can still switch users leaving the first user logged in but trying to log out seems to falter as the login screen is about to load and brings me back to the desktop still logged in.

After switching from a user account to the admin account I can then log out from the admin account and then I'm logged in as the previous user without seeing a log in screen. Then for some reason I can log out from that user account and the login screen loads as normal.

I thought it might have been an issue that I'd caused at install time, the first time I installed it I created a USB drive with Unetbootin and installed from that. So the next time I used the USB image writer available in Petra and used that as my installation media. The USB writer happily deleted my backup files on a separate partition on the USB drive and dumped the image in one partition without telling it would so unfortunately I lost my ISO for Mint 15  but that's another issue.

Anyway I could put up with it and use it as is but my wife hates it and it annoys the hell out of her.

I've run dmesg |grep failed and dmesg |grep Failed and found a few minor issues which I'm not sure if they would be relevant.

Hello, ausminter.

Perhaps executing these steps ==> How to disable "Automatically select the last logged-in user" in the MDM Greeter Screen <== will solve your automatical relogin problem.
The setting "Automatically select the last logged-in user" can have unwanted side-effects, in particular combined with users who have got no password. (Brrrr)

Cheers,
Karl

Thanks Karl !
That's all it was - settings on the login manager.

I feel like such a newb  , I've just moved back to mint from arch and forget how simple some things are sometimes.

I was still in the testing phase, so I assigned passwords for my wife and kids until my wife was happy with the system, I better do that now too.

Thanks again.
