XFCE or Cinnamon

Post by tajnymag »

Hi, I'm going to install Linux Mint 16 (I hope I'll be able to upgrade in-place in June) but I don't know which DE should I use.
Specs:

CPU Intel Celeron T3000
RAM 3 GB
HDD 250 GB

Do you think Cinnamon will be able to work properly without ANY freezing or slow reaction?

Thank you for your response ;-)

You are probably better off with Xfce.

I don't have any problems although YouTube HD video pushes the CPU to it's limits and the display can be "framey". Truthfully, I am impressed with the performance of Cinamon on this machine with a single core, single thread CPU and only 1 GB of RAM... I was concerned that it wouldn't work at all...

In summary >>> for "normal" (non-video intense) applications, either should work just fine although the xfce will probably show better performance... although Cinnamon is probably prettier and more tweekable...

Enjoy the Mint!

Mate should be a good choice too. My Dell 3000 with a P4 cpu and 750 meg ram likes it. Ran way better than XP did. I have since updated the ram to all it will take, (2 gigs). I haven't been sorry I did. $30 bucks from amazon.

LM 17.1 Mate. There's no windows in this box. Not any more :D

What do you mean by this? Do you mean you'll be able to upgrade the OS in June or you hardware? Bc in-place upgrades of the OS (non-LMDE versions Mint) are not really doable. Better to do a fresh install.

As far as your question goes, better to stick with MATE or Xfce imho :D

MATE has better hardware compatibility compared to Cinnamon, IMHO. I have a Pavilion g7 with a quad-core i5 and integrated Intel graphics, and Cinnamon went bonkers. And when I could get it running, there was no working hardware graphics acceleration, so my CPU usage was mega high. It was a compatibility problem with the Intel graphics.

XFCE should also have great hardware support, at that point it's a matter of personal taste. XFCE is a bit more minimalist, if that's your thing. But MATE is excellent, and while YMMV I am hard-pressed to have my memory consumption exceed 700MB and CPU go over 12% utilization/core with normal usage. Even while running a data recovery on an external drive I am hard-pressed to see any significant resource usage.

I hope my two cents helped.
