Webcam won't work

Post by shagbolt »

I have a logitech QuickCam Communicate STX webcam. When i use easycam 2, and use the 'execute webcam' button, cheese opens and the webcam works fine. However, when i try to use kopete, skype, meebo, ect, it doesn't work. Skype and Kopete don't recognize that the webcam is there, they don't detect it at all, but when i use lsusb, this is the output:
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 046d:c018 Logitech, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 413c:2010 Dell Computer Corp.
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 413c:1003 Dell Computer Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 046d:08d7 Logitech, Inc.
The computer knows it is there, but skype doesn't.
Does anyone know how i could get skype to recognize my webcam? thanks!

Have you explored all settings in Skype?
Some applications go a long way to hide some preferences

How odd -- I have the exact same webcam, and it works fine for me in Skype, but Cheese doesn't work!

What's "easycam 2"? I can't find anything by that name in Synaptic.

Easycam 2 is just a program that installs the drivers your computer needs to use a certain webcam. I can't get cheese to work unless i open it through easy cam. i think im gonna switch to the sabayon, the live CD works out of the box. thanks though

Which kernel?
Probably a kernel problem and if a newer kernel solves it it's probably solved in Felicia

webcam is very odd. Mine (integrated in laptop) works fine in aMSN, works but frame rate is really slow in cheese.

Skype program
If you connect your webcam on USB-port via an HUB it does not work, but if you connect directly on USB port it works fine.
Very strange. Under XP no problems

The .26 kernel has some improvements for USB devices and esp webcams. Probably explains why same camera works fine with Sabayon.
