Can't return properly from Hibernate

Post by celsofaf » Fri Apr 18, 2014 3:20 pm

Hello

I have installed Mint 16 Cinnamon on my brand new Dell Inspiron 14R laptop, and have been using Mint 16 on my old laptop (an older Dell, which is now gone). When I try to Hibernate, it turns off correctly and, when I turn my laptop on, I log in and it is as if it had not hibernated, but instead I now have a fresh new login. On my old laptop, no problem at all.

How could I fix it? If it might help, I dual boot with Windows 8.1 without any problem, and I have a swap partition double the size of my RAM.

Hibernating is something really useful to me. I need to fix it.

Thanks

Could you run "pm-hibernate" without the quotes in a terminal (find this in the menu) to see if this resumes properly?

Thanks,
Hamish

Hamish,

After "sudo pm-hibernate", the laptop was turned off. I turned it on again, it simply showed me the login window and I got a fresh new log in, without any of the then-opened programs there. :-/

Hmm, my knowledge can't help you then, sorry. Have you tried googling the issue?

I have the same problem in LMDE on my Toshiba laptop. Had it in Petra also on this machine... Its as if it just shut down when it was supposed to hibernate. I have an 8gb swap.

Check if that state is supported

Code: Select all

pm-is-supported --hibernate;echo "Detected $?"
A return of <> 0 means it's not supported.

Good luck

I have the exact same problem, and when I run the command you suggested I also get:

Code: Select all

Detected 0
Does this mean that my laptop does not support hibernation mode?

A return of '0' means that it is supported. However, there are some problems with certain hardware.

Thanks you, that is what I thought. I still haven't found a viable workaround for it, though.

The only thing I can suggest is googling around. Mine works on the laptop and desktop so it's difficult to try and troubleshoot something that's not broken.

Do you have a swap 2x your physical memory :?: That's one of the first suspects with hibernation problems. Also check if you have a /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume file.

Good luck

I do have a /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume file, and the RESUME UUID is set to the correct UUID for my swap partition. However, I do not have a swap partition that is 2x my physical memory (I have 1.22GB of memory and my swap partition is set to 1.8GB). I'll have to see if increasing the size of my swap partition will fix the problem.

Thanks for the heads up! :)

Update: I tried increasing my swap partition to 2.5GB, but still no luck. When I close the lid to enter into hibernation mode, I just get to a blank screen when I open thd lid again. Afterwards, I can't do anything (everything, including the keyboard, is dead) except reboot.

I have a similar problem with a freshly installed LMDE 201403 on a laptop where hibernate worked before perfectly under Mint 16. I have read this thread so far and discovered that I have no resume file. What should this file contain and what permissions should it have?

EDIT: A kind soul gave me a link to a solution that works for me:

(Look at the post containing the link to the HOWTO.)
