Yup, sudo -i worked as you said. Here's the output:

simon-desktop ~ # cat /etc/sudoers
#
# This file MUST be edited with the 'visudo' command as root.
#
# Please consider adding local content in /etc/sudoers.d/ instead of
# directly modifying this file.
#
# See the man page for details on how to write a sudoers file.
#
Defaults env_reset
Defaults mail_badpass
Defaults secure_path="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin"

# Host alias specification

# User alias specification

# Cmnd alias specification

# User privilege specification
root ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL

# Members of the admin group may gain root privileges
%admin ALL=(ALL) ALL

# Allow members of group sudo to execute any command
%sudo ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL

# See sudoers(5) for more information on "#include" directives:

#includedir /etc/sudoers.d
simon-desktop ~ #

This is practically a brand new installation, it's been like this since day (hour?) one. in fact it's my second install as the first time I had this issue I reinstalled as I thought I must have done something stupid.

Sorry about the delay in replying, we had the in-laws round tonight!

Simon,

Getting stumped here, especially since it's a fresh installation :?

Does mintupdate give any messages when run from the cl and does it say as supervisor in the title :?:

Code: Select all

sudo /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/mintUpdate.py show
After closing the windows press ctl-z to kill the process. This will display another dead icon in the tray, you might have to reboot to fix that.

What does this return :?:

Code: Select all

ldd  $(which sudo)|awk '{print $3}'|while read f;do [[ ! -z $f ]] && (dpkg -S $f);done|awk '{print $1}'|cut -d: -f 1|sort|uniq|xargs dpkg -l

Simon,

This is well out of the ordinary for a new install. I'm starting to suspect a minor corruption of the iso file or the media.

There are just a couple of more thing I would want to try/look at before asking you to re-download, check the md5sum, re-burn and reinstall.

Code: Select all

pkexec --user root /bin/bash
then return the results of

Code: Select all

ps axj|grep bash
Also, if you can return the results of these, but start with a new terminal - don't use the term from the previous entry. All this will just provide a cursory overview of the permissions and groups.

Code: Select all

id

Code: Select all

find /home/$USER ! -user $USER -o ! -group $USER

Code: Select all

find {/home/$USER,/bin,/sbin,/usr/bin/,/usr/sbin,/lib,/usr} -nouser -o -nogroup

Code: Select all

find {/bin,/sbin,/usr/bin/,/usr/sbin} -type f -perm /u+s -ls|sort -k11

Code: Select all

find {/bin,/sbin,/usr/bin/,/usr/sbin,/lib,/usr} -type f ! -user root -ls

simon,

Unfortunately there were no revelations with those results. As a last ditch effort for lack of any brilliant ideas, try reinstalling the network manager applet with all of its related packages.

In the terminal, as if you couldn't already guess:

Code: Select all

sudo -i

Code: Select all

ldd $(which /usr/bin/nm-applet)|awk '{print $3}'|while read f;do [[ ! -z $f ]] && (dpkg -S $f);done|awk '{print $1}'|cut -d: -f 1|uniq|xargs apt-get install --reinstall
If this doesn't change anything, I don't know what will :?

Nope, no change. Looks like a redownload and reinstall.

Thanks so much for all your help WharfRat, I really appreciate it. I'm off on holiday for a week tomorrow and when I'm back I'll hit the download pages again!

All the best and kind regards,
Simon.

You might want to try this: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/deiban-ubu ... -disabled/ as another last ditch effort before reinstalling.

Good luck
