Cannot open .pdf files

Post by Stickytoffeedog » Sat Aug 30, 2014 4:48 am

I get this message when I try: File type Python File (no console) (text/plain) is not supported

Is there a fix for this?

Do all .PDF files behave the same? Sometimes one might be corrupted.

Also, check if the files are opened by the proper application (Okular in KDE, Document Viewer in MATE and Cinnamon). You can check that by right-clicking on a .PDF file --> Properties and change the default application if necessary.

If you were trying to view a .PDF from within Firefox: weird things can/will happen. The PDF preview in Firefox is buggy, slow, and generally unreliable. You can change this in Firefox by having PDF file getting handled by Okular or Document Viewer.

You didn't give us any information about your installation. Which Linux Mint version? What desktop environment (e.g., Cinnamon, KDE, MATE, Xfce)? Such information helps others help you. Steps how to do things differ between versions and desktop environments.

Sorry. I'm using Mint 17 Cinnamon. I've tried opening them with document viewer. I was wondering if I need to add a python something? Or are they corrupt and I need to get another copy?

Like capivara mentioned, is this a problem for just one .pdf file or for all .pdf files? It can be you have a corrupt .pdf file, or that it is badly composed / using uncommon features that are not well supported by the document viewer. In latter case you can alternatives, like try opening it with Firefox or with Google Chrome (both have their own PDF engines, that may work better with certain .pdf files).

There is a bunch of them from one zip file that I can't open. Most pdf files can open on my computer except there have been a few others recently that don't. Maybe I have a problem with my extracting the files? A problem with the archiver?

A lot of newer downloaded .pdf file will not open unless you are using Adobe Reader version 10 or higher. Not available for Linux..

I have downloaded a few files that will not open in Linux because of this..

It's one of the ways Adobe and Microshaft are using to get people back to Windows..

See if you can open this. http://www.linuxmint.com/documentation.php. Click on a link for whatever language first. After it opens go File -> Save Page As and let it save a copy of the PDF somewhere. Then see if you can open that file, just as a test.

Same happenning here: I have downloaded an important form I need to fill in from a French government website and when I try to open it I get the following message (in English!):

Code: Select all

To view the full contents of this document, you need a later version of the PDF viewer. You can upgrade
to the latest version of Adobe Reader from www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
For further support, go to www.adobe.com/support/products/acrreader.html
Does anyone know of a compatible reader?

Russell.

This page lists some Linux PDF software you can try. i think Okular might require some kde packages to run though. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-best-linux-pdf-viewers/

I have heard Okular spoken highly of as a PDF reader.
