Wireless connection randomly does/keyboard issues

Post by bwarnock » Wed Sep 10, 2014 8:34 pm

Hello,

Nearly 1.5 years after installing ubuntu 12.04 and selling the machine, I decided to try linux again on a personal pc. So far, I love the cleanliness of the desktop compared to windows 8.1 and everything runs quite smoothly. I have however noticed two particular issues since installing linux mint 17: cinnamon.

1. After installing, I immediately connected my laptop to my home network, which worked pefectly, and then the next day, I took it to work and connected it to my works network. Both worked perfectly fine. But after a few hours, I turned off my laptop as I had a meeting to attend, and upon coming back, when I turned on my laptop, when clicking on the wireless connections, not only would it show that my works wireless network was "out of range"..it also would not allow me the option to enable wireless. As soon as I attempted to turn on wireless, it would immediately turn it back off. I initially figured it was a wireless driver issue, and decided I would work on it once I got home...as soon as getting home, it worked fine. The next day, I showed up at work, figuring there was an issue with my worrks network....it worked fine, connected perfectly...then when I get home, I could not connect to my homes wireless network. After a few hours and 2 reboots, it randomly decided to start working again.

2. Since installing linux mint, my keyboard has been acting rather strange....as I type sentences, it randomly shifts the curser to random parts of the screen, in which whatever I'm typing, cuts off previously typed sentences. It is a nearly brand new pc, and the keyboard was working perfectly fine before, so not sure if there is a particular setting or chip causing this, but wanted to get anothers opinion on the subject.

I ran lshw as a superuser and here is some info of what I'm currently working with

Re: Wireless connection randomly does/keyboard issues

Your second issue could be a broken touchscreen or trackpad. Try disabling them in the BIOS and using a usb mouse with your laptop. For the wifi problem, I would try booting the computer into windows to test it and determine whether it is a software or hardware problem. (I don't love windows, it just seems like a good way to diagnose the problem.)

I'll give the external usb keyboard and mouse a go for the second problem.

As for the first, the only problem with that is that I decided to completely whipe out Windows and only use Mint. If needed, I do have some Windows 7 and 8 keys and I can reinstall and set-up a dual boot. But I would prefer just using linux for now if possible.

Just a heads up for anyone else whom may experience this issue, I found a fix.

It's a known bug with certain PCs that affects the wifi toggle.
