Mint 17 Cinnamon unexpectedly changed

Post by angryvolcano »

Hi there

So I've been using Mint 17 for a few weeks now without problems, but the last time I rebooted the whole look of the OS had changed: Icons are different. Windows are different (more blocky), the terminal suddenly has black text on a black background and the Ctrl+Alt+T doesn't open one any more.

This also happened when I first got 17. I hated it and decided I must have done something wrong when setting it up so I redid it and it looked fine and worked fine.

Has this sudden change happen to anybody else, and do you know how to revert to the original look and feel?

Regards,

I've been using 17 for awhile now and i havent had that problem.... It could be something you're doing, installing programs, experimental updates, programs from the web, etc. Also it could be someone loging on to your pc and messing with stuff just to mess with you... lol it's most likely that it's being cause by an experimental update, broken package, or a program you installed.

If so, do you know how to revert to a previous state?

Mint 17 Cinnamon look changed and I don't know why

Post by angryvolcano »

It used to look like this: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-nVnv ... mint-2.jpg

Now it looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/EFJofb3.png

The changes of the icons are obvious, but it's more than just some theme (the second screenshot is of the default theme according to Mint); it doesn't shut down correctly (it always, ALWAYS reboots. To shut down I have to hold the power button), Ctrl+Alt+T doesn't open a terminal anymore and creating it as a custom hotkey doesn't work, the function buttons don't work and so on and so on.

The thing is, I have no idea why Mint changed like this. I just rebooted it, and it looked like this. I can't find anything on the internet on this, it looks like I'm the only one with this problem.

Oh, I have a dual-boot setup with Windows 7 and a 64 bit version of Mint.

Thanks for any help!t

As in accordance with the forum rules and especially rule #5 we need more info about your system. Can you please provide us the output of the terminal command mentioned under rule #5!

Yes, this topic sounds identical (with a possible solution) -
Boot & theme issues with Cinnamon.

I've had exactly what you describe, also in the last couple of days. The old theme seems to be one from Gnome days. I was trying out Firebug (HTML/CSS editor) when it happened, but I now know of three people who were doing something different.
Two people have separately and successfully tried the following solution; one who also needed to recover Cinnamon, one who tried it on a working system to help me. He commented that none of his customisations were lost in the reinstall:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install --reinstall cinnamon
Just try it, I'm going to. I see thatyou're running an nVidia graphics driver. So am I, my driver is nVidia 331. There are two other threads about this issue, makes at least four of us, so it looks like a bug.

Go into the appearances area, clk on themes, then on icons and take it from Gnome to whatever you want.
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....
