[SOLVED] Mint 13 Mate Inspiron 1501 Radeon Xpress 1150

Linux Mint 13 Gnome On Inspiron 1501 Radeon Xpress 1150

I just read your post on Linux.com forum posted 2 years ago. I have the same Laptop Inspiron 1501 with ATI Radeon Xpress 1150.
I am trying to run on Mint 11 Gnome. I have to tap a down arrow at boot to avoid automatic boot. Then I hit tab and edit the line starting with the word Linux and ending with the word splash. I then add space nomodeset grub_gfxmode=1280x800x24

This keeps my monitor working so I can run Linux Mint 11 Gnome Live DVD. Since I am using Lan for my internet connection, I can use Firefox to go to youtube and run a video with sound. This is as far as I have gone. When I close Firefox it has scrambled video.

So far, I have tried Mepis 6.5 and 7. I also tried Mint 10 Gnome and Mint 16 XFCE. This is my first time to try Linux.
I am slightly familiar with Win XP but am looking to change to something better. I am a beginner at Linux and can just barely manage to get it to boot on a live DVD with the edits I mentioned.

Would you say I would have better results with Linux Mint 12 KDE? I would like to run it on a pendrive until I know I can trust it. Also, I would like to make any grub edits permanent before I finally Install it.

I found I was not able to download Mint 12, so I was able to download Mint 13 Mate 32 bit which I believe is a gnome desktop.
I am completely at the most basic beginners level on any Linux system, so I am stumbling around. I have reasonable experience on computers that were DOS based and stayed current windows all the way thru WinXP. Now, I need to get away from all forms of Windows. I desperately need help.

I found...
Dell Inspiron 1501
CPU = AMD Sempron 3500+ 1.8GHz 64-bit
RAM = 512MiB standard 2048MiB maximum
HDD = 60GB standard.

I suggest Mint 17.1 Rebecca 32-bit Mate as your base system; with only 1 core CPU to do everything, you can't spare time-out for Ubuntu or Cinnamon prettiness...even using Mate, video playback may stutter.
Don't go backwards through the Mints, lower numbers get security-patches-only [LMDE and 13] or are obsolete [16, 15, 14, 12, 11, 10...] and unsupported.
You will get a lot more Forum support if you are using Mint 17, problems affecting users of the newest system can be tested & solved straight away.
You can fiddle with GRUB as much as you like, it won't affect the Desktop performance once Linux has started.
The nomodeset boot option is always a good start, then see if it works without, then look for proprietory driver recommendations.
Mint will manage okay with 512MiB and a swap partition to start with, but it's much faster with RAM instead of swap space.
Your disk drive is 8 years old? Linux might find wobbly-parts XP never reached. We are here to help :)
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named "manual".

I misspoke when I said I only have 1 GB ram. I actually have 2 GB. When I try to type too fast, I make frequent typos.

My computer is as follows:

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop with ATI Radeon Xpress, AMD Turion X2 TL-50 Processor, 15.4" WXGA, 2GB Ram, Optical drive CD/DVD, 10/100 Ethernet, Dell Wireless 1390 802.11 and 4 usb 2.0

My bad

JOY I installed Mint 13 Maya on my USB stick and edited my grub as directed and added "nomodeset xforcevesa" to the end of my quietsplash line. This seems to take care of my ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 lack of proper driver.
