Can I put my Dell SSD into a Macbook?

Post by goog64 »

I run Linux Mint 17 on my Dell Latitude laptop, but I would like a lighter laptop for travelling.
If I buy a cheap Macbook Air without a hard drive, can I just swap my SSD from the Dell into the Macbook?
I've read that they both use SATA connections, and I've read that guys use Linux Mint on Macbook Airs, so it seems OK but I'm too much of a noob to really understand the issues I might face by just swapping the hard drive over.
Thanks for your help.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I've read that article. I think it's more about installing Linux on a Mac hard drive, rather than actually swapping the entire hard drive over which already has Linux installed.

As long as your Macbook knows what to do with GRUB, I don't see why it would be a problem.

Let us know how it goes!

Is GRUB the thing that decides which operating system to boot?
If so, I only have Mint on my hard drive, so maybe I don't have GRUB?

YES - it is grub.
and so your ssd would have it in sda boot area.

the Mac boots, what it thinks is it's own system,
but you can then shift that boot parameter to another O/S altogether.

- either single boot,, dual, triple boot,, whatever you want.

Thanks for your reply Pierre.
But I'm not sure what this means:
you can then shift that boot parameter to another O/S altogether.

Does that mean that I can put the Dell ssd in the Mac and it will work?

maybe not :o

"As long as your Macbook knows what to do with GRUB, I don't see why it would be a problem."

the Mac has to have it's own system, however small, in order to boot that drive,
- then the that gets shifted to either the Mac O/S, or over to another O/S.

so - you may need to create the Mint on the Mac pc,
and then - move your stuff onto that drive, from ext storage.

OK, so that sounds like I would have to buy a Mac with a working hard drive (rather than a really cheap one with no drive). Probably not worth it.

You should be able to do it with a Mac without a working hard drive,

You just might have to:

-Back up your data to a external source.
-Wipe the drive
-insert the SSD into Mac.
-install Mint from live Media.
-Retrieve data from your back up.

Hope that helps,

Jay :)

it can be done with an existing Macbook HDD:
http://www.everydaylinuxuser.com/2014/0 ... e-osx.html

But - there does seem to be an issue, with the Mac needing some of the Mac system,
on the HDD - in order to boot the HDD itself - then boot any O/S, - even a non-mac O/S.

on a Intel / Amd - X M$ PC - this isn’t an issue - the PC will boot anything that is on the HDD.
- but the Mac system is somewhat different - you seem to need < at least > an Mac shell to boot the HDD.

Also2: the Dell company - like Apple - uses customised components.
- we haven't even looked at whether a Dell SSD - is even suitable, for the task.
