A search has gone bollox for me here.
I decided to install 17.1 MATE on this computer. 32 bit install. All seems OK for the most part but when logged in as a regular user and attempting to start the Software Manager, it asks for passord to perform administrative tasks.
Not sure which password it is looking for becase using the admin password does not work and using the user password does not work. Admin password shows error as incorrect password but user password the password box disappears as if it's going to start, but nothing happens.
Anyone care to help a newbee to Linux Mint (the buntu based version)?

Re: Software manager password fail
What do you mean with "admin password" and "user password"?
By default you have created during the installation of Linux Mint a user account, which belongs to this sudo-group. As log, as you did not remove your account from this group, you can do administrative tasks using this password (which you also created during installation).
Please explain, where this admin password, that you said having used, comes from.

Re: Software manager password fail
Log in as an administrative user. You won't have a problem. Use the admin user's PW.
If you use Synaptic (you have to know the name of the package), instead of Software Manager, your "regular" user can choose an administrative user and type the administrative user's PW.
I got the above dialogues by logging in as a different ("regular") user and trying to use Synaptic.

Re: Software manager password fail
As a regular user, not the administrative user, you cannot open the Software Manager, with any password.
You can open a terminal and "become root" with the command followed by the administrative user's password. Then to start the Software Manager enter
As noted, to start Synaptic, you don't have to "become root" with su
