when i plug the hdmi plug into the port, nothing happens. the tv says something has been connected, but when i switch to it with the remote, its a blank screen that says no signal. absolutly nothing happens on the computer though, i tryed detecting the displays with the nvidia x server setings and the only thing available is my monitor. i had to switch to the nvidia driver from the nouveau driver because my computer would repeatedly freeze up and i would get glitches/ghosting all over the menu icons. i am pretty new to linux and i have no idea how to update or install new drivers other than the ones listed in the driver manager.

You may need to stop mirroring the displays.
Cinnamon desktop: Menu > System Settings >Display
Uncheck "Mirror displays"

MATE desktop: Menu > Control Center > Monitors
Uncheck "Same image in all monitors

You can now drag the rectangles representing the monitors so that they are side-by-side (or any other configuration you want.)
Select the rectangle for your TV.
Make sure it is "On"
Select the resolution you want.
Click "Apply"

One more thing. If the resolution you want doesn't appear in the list, the instructions in this article may help you detect and setup additional resolutions your TV is capable of using.
