install it with synaptic without downloading.

I don't think that XMMS is available from the repositories since Ubuntu 7.10 or so. XMMS2 is there, but It's not the same. I think it's strictly "CLI."

It appears that you might have to install from source. I'm at work though so downloading the package isn't an option for me. If you need instructions on how to install from source here is a good place to start: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompilingEasyHowTo

Just as fair warning, installing from source does have the possibility of breaking your system if done wrong or screwing other things up. I've done it plenty of times with little to no problems though.
