I have new downloads, documents put first on the desktop, because I like to decide later where to file them.
lately they are on my desktop, but not visible. I have to do a file search to find them, and it says they are on the desktop,
If I them move them from the search to the desktop they show up.

Re: file not visible on the desktop
What DE are you using?

Re: file not visible on the desktop
Depending from the DE, which has been asked by Hoser Rob (so name it), there might be an option in the right click menu of the Desktop to show hidden files. Check it. Although I would be very astonished, if a down-loadable file would be hidden / named with a leading dot.
Again, in the context menu of the Desktop click on "Show in terminal" (or similar), than do in the terminal:
and paste the output in the next post.
EDIT: important typo correction in the code-box

Re: file not visible on the desktop
Maybe your download goes to "/root/Desktop" instead of "/home/alkas007/Desktop"...
Even if you're a single user on your computer , you'll have 2 desktop by default.
Take a look on your "program download location" ...
