How to watch Netflix Safely.

Post by Zentonio »

Hi all,

I'm new to Linux and wanted to use this method to install Netflix:

https://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/7 ... t-on-linux

However I noticed that this method seems to require adding another repository, and as I have read that adding new repositories can be a security rick I thought I'd ask if this method seems safe. (I'm not running any anti-virus software at the moment.)

NB: I have already installed Playonlinux and used it to install the Windows version of Firefox, unfortunately when I start to play something on Netflix I get the error "Oops Something went wrong... Digital Rights Management (DRM) Error".

Any advice would be appreciated...

This is needlessly complex. Just install Google Chrome from http://www.google.com/chrome/. That supports Netflix out of the box on Linux. It will add the Google Chrome repository to your system, which you want so you can get updates for Google Chrome automatically through Update Manager.

Hi, thanks for your answer. Using Chrome seems much easier. Unfortunately whenever I try to view that website my display goes black! and I have to reboot. I seem to remember that something like this happened a couple months ago when I installed Chromium too.

Since I removed Chromium this problem only occurred occasionally.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

i think that might be due to hardware acceleration setting inside chrome settings.

Sorry, I explained my problem badly. When I try to view the website: http://www.google.com/chrome/ from Firefox (my current browser), my screen goes black. (I tried turning off the hardware acceleration option in Firefox but the problem remained.)

I seem to remember something like this also happening a couple of months ago when I was using Chromium, though I didn't alter the hardware acceleration options.

Any idea what's going on?

I'd still like to know if the method I mentioned in the first post is considered safe? Any opinions would be welcome.

it is safe, I used that site to setup NetFlix on my mint 16 HTPC, and will do it again when I move to KodiBuntu in a few weeks.

the only thing is you need to be very careful folowing directions there, and even than you might need to go through it more than once if things go wrong.
I had to run through the setup twice last time to get it working. not sure why though.
it would not work the first time around.

Link to the direct download of the installer: https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/goog ... t_i386.deb
(or for 64 bit https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/goog ... _amd64.deb)

That should work, or else on a terminal run this command to get the file:

Code: Select all

wget https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb
Afterwards double-click the downloaded file in your file manager to start the installer.

It has IMO become unnecessary and obsolete to use that method, just for Netflix.

it depends, for many, it is not needed and can be avoided, but for some of us it is the only way to go. why? well if you use desktop and a browser to get to netflix, going through the motion of full custom setup is an overkill.
but for me it is a necessary step as I use XBMC/Kodi and most plug-ins need the
netflixdesktop and/or some lib with in the package to function. they do not work when only Chrome is installed.
so if you just watch netflix on your PC and use browser directly you ok with Chrome setup. if you use HTPC and media center soft, you might need to go through the motion to get it working.

Hi and thanks for the replies everyone.

As it seemed simpler I tried xenopeek's method:

And Netflix was up and running straight away. (I have been trying to get it working for a while.)

Thanks again for your help everyone.
