Switching from Ubuntu

Post by babh » Thu Dec 11, 2008 10:15 am

I read this was at the very least derivative of Ubuntu, and in fact shared repositories, but I currently like my Ubuntu install. This leads to a problem. I really want to install mint (AMD64 when it releases), but I don't really want to loose everything I've set up in Ubuntu, can this be done without dual booting?

hi ...

if you mean loosing your updated and installed packages .... apt-on-cd is a solution for you,
if you mean loosing software-settings, this depends hardly on your chosen software: if you reuse (without deleting) /home/USER/, your files and your defined software config should stay with you ... i.e. home/USER/.tomboy/ should have the same path in ubuntu and mint ... therefor your notes should be fine ... your emails inbox from thunderbird is (what i belive) stored in /home/USER/.mozilla-thunderbird/ ... and so on...

Install and run apt-on-cd on your Ubuntu System. Burn the iso image to a cd. Repeat the process in Mint but instead, you will restore within apt-on-cd in Mint.
