RAW Image Files

Post by mount mint » Sun Jun 14, 2015 12:38 pm

Hi all, I do a lot of photography in RAW format.

Is there anything I can use in Linux software that will let me view RAW image files in folders without opening any programs to view them.

Thanks

If you are looking for a way to browse a folder of image thumbnails, I suggest XnView MP. XnView has been my go-to image viewer for several years, and it works great as "light table". It is fast, thumbnails load very quickly, and it is a nice image viewer. It also can be used for batch conversion and renaming.

32-bit and 64-bit DEBs are available from the website.

Don't let the screenshots on the website or the default setup give you the impression that it is too complex, too complicated, too much for what you're needing. It can be customized, and you can turn off any panel you don't want/need. I really like that the size of the thumbnails can be adjusted.

Although it's an app, I use GThumb which supports RAW.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_image_format ''Many raw file formats, including IIQ (Phase One), 3FR (Hasselblad), DCR, K25, KDC (Kodak), CR2 (Canon), ERF (Epson), MEF (Mamiya), MOS (Leaf), NEF (Nikon), ORF (Olympus), PEF (Pentax), RW2 (Panasonic) and ARW, SRF, SR2 (Sony), are based on the TIFF file format. These files may deviate from the TIFF standard in a number of ways, including the use of a non-standard file header, the inclusion of additional image tags and the encryption of some of the tagged data.''

http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/#i18n ''There are dozens of raw photo formats: CRW, CR2, MRW, NEF, RAF, etc. "RAW Format" does not exist; it is an illusion created by dcraw's ability to read all raw formats.''

It looks like you need a specialist File Manager, or something hacked into Mint to include dcraw as the thumbnailer. Now which Linux distro is for photographers...

While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named "manual".
