Nemo won't open Downloads folder Mint 17.1 (Solved)

Post by holadebob » Fri Jul 17, 2015 4:26 pm

Mint 17.1 x64 Cinnamon

From the Home page (using default file manager Nemo), I selected the Downloads folder and the cpu went nuts, cycling from 100% to 0, and I had to force quit the process and restart desktop to restore ops. Since I also have Thunar installed I tried and successfully opened the Downloads folder. I checked memory use and found no problems, and I also compared the properties of the folder under Thunar and Nemo and found no differences. I uninstalled Thunar thinking there might be a conflict somewhere but after restart, Nemo still wouldn't open the Download folder.

The only folder Nemo will not open is the Download folder. It has about 44 MB of files in it and Thunar and Nautilus (I just installed it to verify) have no problems with opening it. Thunar and Nautilus says the folder has 180 items in it, but Nemo says 111 items (beneath the icon).

I use Unison, but it is set up with another folder. Downloads is not involved with it.

I use Google Chromium 43.0.2357.130 and occasionally Firefox 39.0.

It's quite easy to get a thumbnail-able file to ''lie'' about its contents. Nemo tries to thumbnail it for display and goes bananas; Thunar just shows a plain icon and behaves; maybe.
Data stored in an encrypted volume will only be accessible with the original password. Without this key, all the data will remain scrambled beyond hope of recovery.

Do you have previews turned on? For that many files, that could take a while to load up.

Disabling Preview didn't change anything here.

I did just find out the cause of the Nemo hangup on opening the Downloads folder. I removed file types one by one until the problem disappeared. When I removed the two pdf files in the Downloads folder, Nemo now accesses the folder.

Can anyone tell me how to get Nemo to allow pdf files?

thank you!

There were two pdf files in the Downloads folder, and one was not a problem with Nemo. The other must have some uniqueness that Nemo doesn't like, although Doc Viewer displays the file fine.

OK, I think I've found the source of the problem. The pdf file that could not be accessed by Nemo was written by Aspose.pdf, and the one that could be accessed by Nemo was Adobe.pdf. Thunar and Nautilus have no problems with either source.

Thankyou for your ideas and support.
