Wireless driver enabled - but no network?
Hi,
I'm new to Mint and just installed it on my laptop. (Dualboot with Vista.) Everything seems to work except the wireless internet.
In Hardware Drivers I found: "Support for Atheros 802.11 wireless LAN cards enabled" but Mint doesn't find the 4-5 wireless networks (one of which is mine) that Vista finds in the exact same location. Guess I'm doing something wrong .. could somebody please help m figure out how to scan for wireless networks?

The activated drivers may not be the right ones for your card. Post the output of from a terminal.

Re: Wireless driver enabled - but no network?
It really depends on how you want to do it. Method 1 (best) requires some downloading. Do you have a wired connection for Mint, or will downloaded packages have to be manually moved? Method 2 (second best) doesn't require any downloading. Everything is in the Mint filesystem now. Method 1 uses opensource wifi drivers from Atheros for Linux. Method 2 uses an app called "ndiswrapper" to use the Windows wifi driver in Linux. Alternately, if you happen to have a Ubuntu 8.10 CD lying around, they included the modules on the CD to fix this. You just need to disable the ath driver in the hardware drivers manager, add the CD as a repository, and install and reboot.

Re: Wireless driver enabled - but no network?
I have a wired connection for Mint.
Do I just remove the present driver then sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic and reboot?

Yes.

Re: Wireless driver enabled - but no network?
Ok, so I did that and it appears that a new driver was installed. It's called "Support for 5xxx series of Atheros 802.11 wireless LAN cards". But the computer still doesn't find my wireless network?
Re: Wireless driver enabled - but no network?
Did you make sure to deactivate the old driver and activate the new in the hardware drivers manager?

Re: Wireless driver enabled - but no network?
Mint may do something different as far as the modules. I would suggest both of you try using ndiswrapper. It lets you use the Windows driver in Linux. Mint already has your driver in the file system. Disable all ath related drivers in the driver manager. Go to Menu>Administration>Windows Wireless Drivers. Select to install a new driver. Navigate to /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintwifi/drivers/Atheros_AR5007eg and select to install the net5211.inf file. Then open a terminal and run these one at a time and reboot:
Code: Select all
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
Code: Select all
echo “ndiswrapper” | sudo tee -a /etc/modules
Code: Select all
echo “blacklist ath_pci” | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Re: Wireless driver enabled - but no network?
Look in the package manager(synaptic) and see what version ndiswrapper you are using. Some of the older versions had this problem. I think it was fixed in the 1.42 release.

Re: Wireless driver enabled - but no network?
I spent a lot of time trying to get Atheros wifi to work on my acer aspire one, tried all the alternatives and was unable to connect. Eventually I bought Intel Mini pci wifi card 3945 for $25 and replacing the atheros wifi card, and now no problems at all. I would suggest this as a reasonable solution to the atheros wifi problems.

Do you have wpasupplicant enabled? http://www.ubuntugeek.com/enable-wpa-wi ... buntu.html
