How to unzip?

Post by whichonespink? »

I've been using linux for a while now and i still don't know how to unzip files! As you can tell i'm very technically challenged, and thats putting it nicely!
At the moment i have a file i wish to use but i can't.
I double click on it and i end up at the archive manager. i highlight was i want and hit extract. Another box pops up and i hit extract in this too.
It then goes to the destination i want, my documents, and thats where i have trouble.
If i double click on one of the files it just goes thru' the whole thing again and again. I am obviously doing something wrong, or not doing the correct thing at all, but what?

thanks.

thanks for replying.

when i right click extract isn't one of the options that is seen.
it does show extract when i'm in the archive manager, but thats what i've been clicking on.

if i click on 'open in a new tab', and then right click at the new tab, it asks 'open with?'

If you right-click on a non zipped file like a photo do you see a "Compress" dialog in the context?
If so compress a file to see if that file's context offers "Extract" options.

Based upon whichonespink? post history I'm thinking he bonked his system by installing dolphin, which pulled in a host of KDE libraries. In my experience KDE and gnome do not work well together problems always arise.

Maybe this will help

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install engrampa
then:

Code: Select all

pkill caja
Caja then restarted itself and afterwards within the last entries there is a "compress" option.

Q: How do I unzip a file?
A: unzip <filename>

It could not be more logical than this. LOL!

Thank you!
