Trouble with recent rsyslog sw version 5.8.6

Post by velky_pivo » Sat Aug 08, 2015 9:07 pm

Mint 13 Maya 64-bit Mate

Recently, my CPU utilization went to 100% on both of my CPUs most of the time.
Syslog file is now flooded by low level kernel messages, and takes up GigaBytes instead of 100kB or so, as with previous rsyslog sw version.
(I was able to eliminate any hw related issues as a culprit since I have several other OSes installed included a copy of same Mint installation running several updates back).

Is there a way to adjust level of logging so that syslog is reasonably sized or should I just uninstall it via Mint sw manager ?

You should really find out the cause of the kernel messages.

For the time being you can run

Code: Select all

sudo /usr/sbin/logrotate -f /etc/logrotate.conf
Good luck

Caused by:
r592: IRQ: DMA error

Supposedly, something that has to do with flaky driver trying to distinguish between USB stick vs. Ricoh SD card reader, or something like that.
This causes to dump lots of info to syslog and the file grows huge quickly.
Number of newer Linux kernels seem to have this issue. Some are coming up with fix.

Interesting that I am not seeing more "Minters" dealing with this.
