Complete newbie user, cannot increase screen resolution

Postby Necrosynth » Thu Jan 08, 2009 11:41 pm

I am trying linux for the first time. I cannot seem to get my screen resolution over 800x600. I have an integrated nvidia geforce mx graphics card. Should I even attempt to use the proprietary driver, the screen will freeze after half a minute and require a hard reboot.

Now, before I ask for help. I have no clue how to:
run as root
edit xorgconf
or just about any basic linux command.

I have a monitor with 1284*1080 resolution, using it at 800*600 is making my eyes bleed. I have seen question similar to mine, but the answer confuses me more then the question.

So, now I beg for help
